Determination of Iron Casting Strength and Hardness by Free Oscillation Technique

The braking system used in railway transport includes parts of complex geometry made of cast iron SCh 18. The technique for acoustic testing of such parts was developed; the results of experimental study fulfilled within the framework of the development are given.
Testing was executed by free oscillation technique. The free oscillation were induced by the impact; the device “Zvuk 203M” was used for oscillation measurements registration. Rejection rates were determined on the base of analysis and processing of data obtained at integrated testing consisted of acoustic measurements and destructive mechanical tests of rod witness-specimens with a round cross-section.
