Grinding Damage Detection in Gears and Bearing Balls Using Magnetic Barkhausen Emission Technique

The method of analysis of the magnetic Barkhausen noise (MBN) can detect various grinding defects without need for any special surface preparation. In this paper experimentally confirmed a significant increase of MBN at the grinding damaged region compared to undamaged region. The severity of grinding damage as indicated by the MBN analysis and the Nital etching are compared. It has been found that the MBN analysis have better sensitivity to detect less severe grinding damage than Nital etching due to the combined influence of both microstructural softening and increase in tensile residual stresses on the MBN signal level.
