Ultrasonic Phased Array Inspection: 1. Emitting and Receiving Ultrasonic Signals Using Phased Arrays

G. Passi

Traditionally ultrasonic phased array (PA) inspection is associated with Sector Scan (S-scan) and B-scan imaging provided through beam steering with use of linear array probes. The only reason for so limited impression is that most of commercially available PA flaw detectors were created through simple copying of medical ultrasound equipment related to diagnostics of human soft tissue. On the other hand the lack of sources providing non-engaged description of principles of operation, strengths and weakness of PA technology independently on type of the instrument and name of the manufacturer leaves practitioners without clear understanding of the specs of the equipment and its real performance. The series of articles started in the present issue of NDT World Review is aimed to resolve the said lack of information submitting UT specialists with a platform for critical comparative analysis of the abilities of PA stuff and technologies.
