Experience in Ultrasonic Testing of Austenitic Welded Joints Using SAFT Technique and Phased Array Technique

Introduction. Conventional ultrasonic testing is most common non-destructive testing method. But this method has number well-known disadvantages such as the inability to save control results, the insufficient informative value of date, etc. The development of modern electronic components has allowed to realize an old idea using phased array technique and synthetic aperture focusing technique. Using these techniques allows to get rid from many disadvantages of conventional ultrasonic testing.
Method. This paper presents the results of ultrasonic testing using acoustic tomography of large thickness austenitic steel welds. The longitudinal wave was used during the inspection.
Results. This paper describes the evaluation of flaws detection during conventional ultrasonic testing, and radiographic testing.
Conclusion. The results show that the ultrasonic testing using acoustic tomography can be applied for inspection of large thickness austenitic steel welds in order to increase the inspection reliability.
