Multispectral and Multiscale Analysis of Leonardo’s Paintings

T. Calligaro, E. Laval, E. Ravaud, M. Menu

On the example of Leonardo da Vincis works (Mona Lisa, Saint Anne, Virgin Mary and Child and La Belle Ferronnière) which are stored in Louvre activities of the Centre for Research and Restoration of the French Museums for the analysis, restoration and preservation of works of art are considered. Various methods of the analysis of the painting technique of the artist and the materials used by it are used: Х-ray fluorescence (XRF scanning), μRaman, fiber optics reflectance spectrometry and infrared reflectography. Special attention is paid to the analysis of the Leonardos sfumato. The association of art historians, curators, conservators and conservation scientists appears very efficient in order to understand more in depth the artist’s techniques, and also the posthumous life of masterpieces.
