The possibilities of the eddy current method are considered in comparison with other methods of non-destructive testing (ND) used to rolling stock component inspection at repair enterprises of Russian Railways. The features of the device of eddy current flaw detectors of various types and their operational characteristics are considered. It is shown that the main advantage of the eddy current inspection method is the ability to estimate the depth of the defect. It is shown that magnetic particle and eddy current methods can complement each other in cases where the depth and length of the defect are critical.
