Assessment of Metal Discontinuity Flaw by Ultrasonic Flaw Detector with Digital Focusing of Antenna Array

The possibilities to solve the problem of metal discontinuity flaw type and size assessment with the use of an ultrasonic flaw detector with digital focusing of antenna array is shown. Owing to different digital image reconstruction algorithms the type of quite big discontinuities can be defined from a shape of their screen image; a real discontinuity size – from a screen image size. For discontinuity size comparable with a wave length, the two-dimensional ARD-diagram is developed; the diagram enables discontinuity estimation to be done from the equivalent sizes of disk reflectors.
